Getting Started
1. Push dial to turn on/off. Rotate to adjust brightness
2. Set button (press), air gap (pull)
3. Status LED
4. Dial insert for rectangular wall plates
5. Device ID
Note: We’ve been alerted that some customers may receive a switch with the incorrect unit label applied resulting in mislabeled wires on the back. Please install by wire color, not label:
Black = Line
Red = Load
White = Neutral
Green = Ground
IMPORTANT: We’ve discovered an issue where some i3 devices may have shipped with a configuration issue that impacts performance and reliability. To ensure best performance and reliability, factory reset before using.
Tools needed
Phillips screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
Voltage detector
Wire cutter / stripper
Are you installing a single switch?
This guide covers a single switch controlling a fixture. If you are installing as part of a multi-way circuit (2 or more switches controlling the same fixtures) check out this article: Wiring with Multiple Switches Controlling the Same Fixture
Step 1. Turn off power
Remove power to your switch by turning off the appropriate circuit breaker at the electrical service panel. Confirm power is turned off by flipping the existing wall switch on and off.
Step 2. Remove old switch
Unscrew and pull the old switch away from the wall. Look in the wall box for neutral wires. These are usually 2 or more white wires connected with a wire nut. If you do not have these or are unsure, stop and contact support.
Disconnect the wires and make sure to straighten the ends and have about 1/2” length of exposed wire.
Step 3. Turn on power
Turn on power at the circuit breaker and use a voltage detector to identify which exposed wire has voltage. This will be considered the line wire. The wire without voltage will be the load wire.
Step 4. Turn off power & connect wires
Turn off power at the circuit breaker. Connect the Dial wires to the identified wires in the junction box.
Verify that the wire nuts are secure and that no exposed copper wire is visible except for the bare ground wire.
Step 5. Install and turn on power
Install the Dial into the junction box with the status LED facing upwards. Turn on power at the circuit breaker.
Step 6. Test
Tap the dial to turn on/off the connected fixture. Rotate the dial to adjust brightness.
If the fixture is not dimmable change the Dial to on/off mode (see the end of this guide).
Step 7. Link to Insteon Hub 2
In the Insteon Director app, follow the on-screen instructions to pair your Dial to the Insteon Hub 2.
Insteon Hub 2 enables control from your smart phone and voice assistant. Visit Insteon.com/hub to learn more.
Enjoy your new Dial
Adjust brightness, set schedules and create scenes for your Dial using the Insteon Hub 2 and Director app.
Manually change between dimmer and on/off modes
Out of the box, your Dial is set to dimmer mode. If it’s wired to a non-dimmable bulb or fixture, follow the instructions here:
Pull out the set button to engage - the air gap (status LED will turn off)
Press and hold the dial
While pressing the dial, push the set button back in place
Continue pressing the dial until the status LED turns blue and the device beeps twice (on/off mode) or beeps once (dimmer mode)
